Week One (11/27-12/1):
- Wednesday: Overview course, particularly the mock and real chapel assessments/events. Class activity. Homework: read Kolata's FLU: The Prologue ix and Chapter 1, The Plague Year pp.3-33. Also research and define the word pandemic.
- Friday: Special visitor; introduce family history; discuss our flat classroom metaphor. Discuss Kolata; review expectations for HOT Log. Homework: examine a US History text for content of the 1918 event and work on first HOT Log which is due Monday.
- Saturday: View PBS Influenza 1918; Homework: read first Case 1. An incident in Boston.
Week Two (12/3-12/8):
- Monday: First HOT Log due. Process the Case Study. Homework: Read Barry pp.169-184 (Chapters 14 & 15); check out the pictures, too!
- Wednesday: Continue Case Study; review Barry reading. Introduce questionnaire; what is the goal of the questionnaire? In an attempt to do some original research, we want to find out what people know and how they know it. What do people know? What do you want to research? Homework: draft insightful questions.
- Friday: discuss the questions in the context of research skills and design a questionnaire Homework: write a 500 word course evaluation. For Monday, interview community adults and complete questionnaires.
- Saturday: revisit family history; discuss evaluations; start Case 2 Around the World. Homework: write HOT Log for Monday.
Week Three (12/10-12/14):
- Monday: Collect HOT Log. Discuss questionnaire; review Case 2 Around the World. Homework: read Chapter 2 of Kolata.
- Wednesday: discuss Kolata. Homework: read Chapter 3 of Kolata.
- Friday: discuss Kotata; Homework for Jan. 4th finish Kolata; continue with questionnaires.
Week Four: (1/3-1/5):
- Friday: discussing what students encountered while giving the draft questionnaire. Be mindful of how we can refine this document and how we can input and process our data? Also revise in an email to yourself your HOT Log abstract (overview phrase of ideas, two keywords and username) for Sat.
- Saturday: Introduce wiki posting class culture for our HOT Logs. Continue work with the questionnaire. Break into groups to summarize our take away points from chapters 4-10 of Kolata's Flu. Describe next HOT Log. Homework: write HOT Log for Monday.
Week Five: (1/7-1/12):
- Monday: Collect HOT Log. Continue with Questionnaire work and our evaluation of Kolata (group work).
- Wednesday: Questionnaire and Family/Local history group work. Kolata group work. Homework: groups will work on their Kolata projects.
- Friday: Demonstrate upload of HOT Log #2. Work in Kolata groups. Homework: groups will work on their Kolata projects.
- Saturday: HOT Log groups (peer edit; abstract phrase and two keywords); upload HOT Log #3Questionnaire and Family/Local history group work; Kolata group work. Homework: groups will submit word documents on Monday of their Kolata analysis.
Week Six: (1/14-1/19):
- Monday: Snow day. Review group work of Kolata; assess Questionnaire drafts.
- Wednesday: Review group work of Kolata; assess Questionnaire drafts.
- Friday: Review Questionnaire; break down into groups of two to collate Kolata take-aways chapter by chapter (finish for homework); break into Chapel Groups.
- Saturday: Meet in Tisch for PBS Killer Flu DVD. HOT Log # 4 (based on framework of your Chapel Group theme) for homework.
Week Seven: (1/21-1/26):
- Monday: Collected HOT Logs; worked in Chapel Groups; discussed HxNy; asked for more research on this topic; students also completed specific Chapel Group assignments.
- Wednesday: Revisit HxNy; revisit Chapel Group work.
- Friday: create new habits for writing HOT Logs (begin HOT Log #5); share with teachers and/or Chapel groups your writing ideas and how you plan to organize your ideas. Make sure you finish up and bring your surveys for Sat. Discuss how individual Chapel groups will use the wiki to plan, organize and execute work.
- Saturday: Peer edit and uploead HOT Log #4. Finalize your HOT Log #5.
Week Eight: (1/28-2/1):
- Monday: Collect HOT Log. Collate surveys; bring your computer!!!

- Friday: Important day to finalize outline for Mock Chapel at the close of winter term. (classes end at noon)

Spring Term:
Week One: (3/24-3/29):
- Monday: vacation
- Wednesday: Reviewed Exam Evaluation; working conditions exercise; assigned HOT Log. 1918 Review "Quiz" sheet.
- Friday: Finish working conditions; brainstorm and develop an outline for Spring Chapel. Once we have a productive outline (next Monday), then we can discuss how best to arrange groups.
- Saturday: View PBS Avian Flu DVD. HOT Logs due on Monday.
Week Two: (3/31-4/5):
- Monday: Hand in HOT Logs; each class member will discuss their HOT Log. Continue and complete Spring Chapel outline. Discuss how we will design group structures.
- Wednesday: Peer review of HOT Logs (abstract and keyword posting). Begin to break up into groups.
- Friday: In place of this week's HOT Log, students will write a report and share any sample documents that they find in their inquiry. Then we will work towards finalizing our outline for Chapel. Begin a discussion on how we will organize ourselves into groups and who decides. Report topics will be explained in class. Reports will be due on Wed. the 9th.
- Saturday: View another of the PBS series based on class interest and direction.
Week Three: (4/7--4/12):
- Monday: discuss problems and brainstorm solutions about the reports for Wed. We must finalize our outline for the May Chapel as well as our small group organization.
- Wednesday: share our reports in class; hand in typed copies.

- Friday: discuss expectations for a draft of the script (words and images that your group will present). As a large group, we will discuss problems that small groups may encounter; we will share problem-solving strategies and then break into small groups. We will need text and images in print version by Tue. April 22nd at 8am; hard copies of the script must be in faculty mailboxes so that they can be reviewed before Wed's class. NB: failure to meet deadlines will result in an assignment to Daytime or Evening Study hall or Detention.
- Saturday: Continue with group work. Also, post your written pandemic plan to the class wiki on the pandemic planning page.
Week Five: (4/21-4/26):
- Monday: Long weekend.
- Wednesday: Share scripts in a large group; be ready to offer constructive criticism. Remember our working conditions from the first week of the spring term.
- Friday: discuss expectations for HOT Log #9. Assignment will be to review all fourteen pandemic plans on the wiki page and select three plans in which you will analyze. Your goal is to identify the three most important ideas which make for a good pandemic preparedness plan. You must use either the CDC or the WHO web page as your credible source; you may use other credible sources as well.
- Saturday: Discuss how HOT Log #9 is progressing; hand in HOT Log #9 on Monday.
