Proof
The play, Proof, by David Auburn is a very interesting book that is filled with drama and mathematics. I thought that Auburn did a good job of setting up the play right from the start by showing Catherine, the main character of the play, having a dream. This dream at the beginning of the play kind of tells us what the play is going to be about, and did a good job of not making the play confusing. By not making the play confusing, it makes the reader more interested in the book. I also thought it did a good job in the beginning of showing Catherine’s interest for mathematics and how she is an intelligent girl. Also by bringing up Hal, Catherine’s friend, in the beginning of the story instead of towards the middle shows how he is an important character in the play. This gives the reader a good back round of the characters in the story.
I thought that the main piece of discussion in this play, which was the proof, made the story more interesting and more exciting to read. When Catherine gets the key and shows Hal the proof in a drawer of Catherine’s father’s office after searching it, I automatically thought that the father wrote it. Then, when Catherine says that she wrote it, it left me wondering. By leaving the reader with the question of who really wrote the proof made me want to keep reading so that I would find out the answer. I think that a good book is one that leaves you wondering through out the time while you are reading, and proof did a good job of this.
I thought that the drama of the book was what really made it a good read. Right away you know it is a drama when you find out that Catherine’s father died. One of your parents dieing is a great loss and can do a lot of damage to the lives of people who lost them. By showing Catherine having these flashbacks that makes it seem like her father is really there makes the play more dramatic and interesting. Catherine tells herself that she is not crazy through out the book. Doing this shows how Catherine actually is going crazy, and she is going crazy because of the loss of her father. By Catherine going crazy shows us the love that she had for her father and how she is missing him and having a hard time now that he is gone. This love for her father brings a lot of Drama to the book and makes you actually think of the character as someone you know. You start to feel bad for Catherine because of what she is going through. Also, Catherine’s feelings for Hal keep you wondering while reading the book as well. Catherine sleeps with Hal in the book, but it does not seem like its true love. This love that is shown in the play makes the play more interesting and captivates you as a reader. I think that this drama makes it more exciting for the reader.
