Roger Williams
Roger Williams is a man who went against the culture in his time.  One of the main reasons why he went against his culture is because of his interaction with the Indians.  He wrote against the puritans and was a middleman for the Indians.  He lived with them and learned their languages.  This was against the culture because when America was first being discovered, the Indians were not treated fairly.  They were forced to do work and some times beaten by explorers.  Since Roger Williams actually interacted with these people and did not just treat them terrible all the time, he was not being normal compared to other settlers.  He was an English settler who was not a follower, but instead did what he thought was right.  Not doing what everyone else was is a reason he is still recognized for his actions.
It is also known that Roger Williams went against his culture because John Winthrop and his assistants wanted to send him back to England.  They wanted to because they said that his opinions were dangerous and spreading.  They did not like how he was dealing with the Indians, and wanted him to treat them just like everyone else did.  Roger Williams’ ideas made other Englishman angry, and they went against the culture at that time.  This is another way to show how Roger Williams’ opinions differed from the normal, and how he was a leader in his time period, not a follower.
