Streetcar Named Desire
I read the play, A Streetcar Named Desire, by Tennessee Williams, and I was quite impressed. The play was very interesting and exciting to read. It was full of drama and enticed me to keep on reading, I hardly ever wanted to put the book down. A lot of times plays can be confusing and boring, but this one was the opposite. It was easy to read and enjoyable. It is a play that was made around the 1950’s, which gives it a more modern writing style. By having a more modern writing style, the play is less confusing to read. I enjoyed reading A Streetcar Named Desire and I recommend many people to read it.
In this play, there is a lot of Drama between the three main characters Stella, Blanche, and Stanley. Stella is really attatched to her husband Stanley, but he does not treat her well. He is a strong man who does not respect women and thinks that the only purpose that women serve is to serve men. He leaves her home while he goes bowling and he makes her do everything around the house. He does not show much respect for her but she still says she loves him more then anything. Then, when Stella’s sister Blanches visits her, Blanche is amazed at how much love Stella has for Stanley and can not wait to meet him. Although, she finds out later that he does not respect her sister. Blanche tries to tell Stella this through out the play but Stella doesn’t listen. Stanley even hit Stella one time when he is drunk, but Stella still came back to him after Stanley gave an apology. Also in the play, Blanche, who was not in a relationship at the time, starts to like Stanley’s Friend Mitch. However, things did not end well for Blanche because Stanley ended up raping her in the play. This puts Blanche through a lot of distress and when she tries to tell Stella, her own sister, that Stanley raped her, Stella does not believe Blanche but instead believes Stanley who denied the rape. This causes Blanche to go crazy and Stella ends up sending her to a mental Institution at the end of the play. Stella chose her abusing Husband Stanley over her own sister, which showed how much power Stanley has over her.
This play was filled with excitement and made me want to just keep reading. It had me on the edge of my seat and I just wanted to keep reading and never stop. I enjoyed reading A Streetcar Named desire and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for something exciting to read.
