Experimenting with a New Literary Form
I considered this to be a new literary form because the bodies are not in a perfect circle and the people's limbs are twisted with each other and distorted. The normal way to portray a circle of people would just to have them standing in a circle together and instead, he painted them in a different form.
Presenting things in a non-linear fashion
This is a non-linear painting because there isn't one thing going on that makes the painting about a specific object or feeling. There are random objects floating around the picture which makes things mixed up and very non-linear. There are also no patterns.
Reader must Decode fragmentary contents
This picture is representing the modern term of decoding fragmentary contents because it is a multitude of random shapes and drawings that you must try to figure out the meaning and if the shapes are a symbol of something that the artist is trying to portray.
Loneliness and Alienation is another element of modernism. This is illuminated in this picture because the dark backround sends the sad emotion and the girl in the picture portrays a look of sadness and anxiety. There are no other people around her and she is hiding which represents the alienation part of modernism.
Another element of modernism is when the artist presents puzzling features because the mystery itself, is the message. In this painting by Henri Mitesse, this element of modernism is illuminated. There seems to be objects that resemble people and musical instruments, but it is not clear enough for one to state that as a fact. The reader must come up with their own interpretation of the painting and decide what the message is and why it is being presented in such a way.
Fragmentary Content; There is no whole
This image, also painted by modernist, Henri Mitesse, represents this element of modernism because the pieces in the painting are not working together to make a person, object, or message. There is not a whole picture. It is all fragments which make up the picture, but they do not go together. They are fragments which stand on their own.
Reader Must Participate, add emotion, and draw their own conclusion.
This painting represents emotion already because there are tears. However, the artist has set the mood, but it is up to the reader to add their own conclusion as to why the person is crying. They need to figure out the emotion of the crier. Are they crying from happiness or sadness? This painting represents this element of modernism becuase it gets the reader thinking, but doesn't give away the ending. It makes the reader add their own thought about the painting.
The final element of modernism is represented in this painting. The element is belief in a higher power. The woman in this painting is clearly a believer of a higher power since she is carrying a cross and holding it close to her heart. She believes in a type of God, which is higher than herself. The painter may have painted this to show his or her own belief in a power, or to represent that many people do believe in high power. Anotehr artist could illuminate the same modern element by showing a person who does not believe in a higher power.
