Borders

The Likud Party has a very strong opinion on where the borders for Israel should be. They believe that the land that Israel controls is theirs and theirs alone, that the Palestinians should never be allowed back into their country, and that no land should be given up. This can be shown by several quotes from their platform, which clearly states their beliefs on the Israeli/ Palestine border problem. The first quote Òthe government of Israel flatly rejects the establishment of a Palestinian Arab state west of the Jordan river.Ó Secondly ÒJerusalem is the eternal, united capital of the Sate of Israel and only of Israel.Ó Thirdly  Ò the Jordan river will be the permanent eastern border of the State of Israel. Finally Ò the Jewish communities in Judea, Samaria and Gaza are the realization of Zionist values, and the Likud will continue to strengthen and develop these communities and will prevent their uprooting.Ó. After reading the Lukid parties ideas on the issue, it is clear, that as long as the Lukid party has a say in the politics of Israel that the Palestinians will never be willingly let back into their homelands.

2. Right of Return

The Likud Party has two very different views towards the two rights of return laws. The Israeli right of return law passed in 1950 says Ò every Jew has the right to come to this country as an immigrant and be granted automatic Israeli citizenship.Ó The problem with this law is that there is no clear definition of a Jew. The Israeli government passed laws stating that everyone had to have identity cards showing two classifications; nationality and religion. To list Jew as your religion, you had to be accepted by an orthodox Rabbi. As a result if an Orthodox Rabbi does not accept you, then you cannot claim to be Jewish in your religion. You are still allowed to live in Israel, but you cannot marry a Jewish women and you cannot be buried in a Jewish cemetery. The Likud party is taking the side of the Orthodox Rabbis because that is where most of its support comes from. As a result as long as the Orthodox Jews keep voting for the Liqud party, the Likud party will back them up.

The other right of return applies to the Palestinians and  says that they should be allowed to return to their homeland, which is now Israel. The Likud party is completely against this, in fact most of what it does is completely opposite of that.

4. Settlements

Likud thinks all settlements should be stay, as a part of the ÒIsraeli unilateral disengagement planÓ. This will demolish four settlements on the West Bank. Then $500,000 will be given to each family that was forced to relocate. That would be about 1,500 families that would be paid the relocation money. The U.S would likely be helping to cover these costs.

5. Jerusalem

Likud warns that Jerusalem is theirs and there should be no discussion or debate about it. A majority of both Israelis and Palestinians support the idea of having JerusalemÕs holy sites be under Israeli control and having the Christian and Muslim sites be under the Palestinian control.
