The Jackal:
"Sydney Carton, idlest and most unpromising of men, was Stryver's great ally. What the two drank together, between Hilary Term and Meichaelmas, might have floated a king's ship" (93).
Carton is a sidekick. A lawyer assistant to Stryver. His alcoholism makes him less of a morally just man than he could be. His intellect rises above his alcoholism, ironically, winning the case for Darnay by pointing out his own similar appearance beyond reasonable doubt.
Unfortunately, by freeing Darnay, he has acquitted his own competition regarding Lucie, for they are both in love with her.
Carton, in modern times, would probably favor music by Pearl Jam and Nirvana. He would have a messy, sloppy apartment. His humble abode would be filled with both empty and full bottles of liquor. Despite his alcoholism, he is still a very bright individual with the potential to be morally strong, which would therefore allow for a bookshelf with books of philosophy and adventure. Ultimately, Carton is an individual who displays the utmost integrity and selflessnes. He is man who truly cares about the happines of others rather than his own self intersts. We will not give anything away regarding the outcome of the story, but take our word for, Carton is a good guy.
Carton as a Teenager
Carton Today, as he still drinks yet contemplates his life.
Carton would have attended Columbia Law School where he would graduate but over his time there develop his drinking problem.
