Pioneer

Faculty Advisor: Mrs. Gotwals

Student Contacts:

The Pioneer is Suffield Academy's annual yearbook. It is produced by an interested group of student volunteers under the guidance of a smaller group of senior leaders, one editor-in-chief, and one faculty advisor. We work closely with a representative from Josten's Publishing. While the editor-in-chief is ultimately in charge of delegating jobs and overseeing layout procedures, each of the senior leaders has an assigned portion of the book for which he or she is responsible. Each year these specific roles will vary with the particular interests of the individuals. Subjects which must be covered include: sports photography, clubs and activities, senior pages, underclassmen, faculty, candids, special events, and advertising.

Senior leaders for the Pioneer learn how to organize a group of volunteers, delegate responsibility, make decisions about content and layout, and ultimately oversee the production of a document which will commemorate a year in the life of Suffield Academy. In the process, they must also become familiar with our publishing software, Indesign, with Photoshop, learn how to use our digital cameras, and develop a working relationship with the representative from our publishing house.

This year, we will be adding more focus on the arts at Suffield. Music, Drama, Dance and Visual Arts will each get a 2 page spread.

Money raising. This is important. We NEED people really gung ho and ready to put forth a spirited money raising effort through ad sales. (both business and family)

Leadership positions

1- Managing editor and either co - or associate managing editor

2- photography editor.

3- layout editors - three or four would be nice - one for each section - one for sports, one for student life, one for senior pages, and one for "other" which includes portraits, ads, and division pages

4- One or two business managers

All editors, except business managers, should be willing to learn the software. Previous experience with Indesign and Photoshop is helpful. Other skills include the ability to delegate work, to work with others and inspire kids to get involved. Good organizational skills are also needed.

Business managers need to be able to contact parents and businesses to ask them to purchase ads. Need to be able to manage a budget and work with the business manager to meet fiscal goals.
