Mission / goals
The proctor program is an integral part of residential life at Suffield Academy. Eleventh and twelfth grade boarding students are selected to serve as proctors in each residence hall on campus. Criteria for proctor selection includes: willingness to abide by school rules, loyalty to dorm faculty, integrity, and conflict resolution skills. Residence hall policies are enforced by the proctors, but primarily they serve as a liaison between dorm parents and students in the dorm. Proctors are expected to serve as model citizens and also role models in the residence halls and on campus. Through this program, working with the residence hall staff as well as regular meetings, the twenty-eight proctors are able to further develop their own leadership skills.
Leadership Positions
There are a variety of positions available to applicants. With twelve residences on campus, there is a position for those students who want to live in a larger dorm with their peers, a smaller dorm with younger students, or an historic home on Main Street. Each dorm has a different faculty dorm team and a unique feel. In addition, students could have the opportunity to work as a team with other proctors or as a single proctor depending on the dorm. Proctors are expected to attend a biweekly meeting, which supports their skill development and provides information on special topics.
Application Process
The application process is extensive. First, applicants must prepare a typewritten application which is available after winter weekend and due back before March break. Applications are available from Mr. Lynch or Mrs. Adelsberger. After the applications have been reviewed, each candidate must be interviewed by two current proctors. These interviews, coupled with the written application , will be reviewed and evaluated with input from the applicant's current dorm parents and advisor. Placements are announced in the beginning of May.
Any other information of interest or relevance.
Each residence's proctors are asked to maintain a website for the dorm. Each website must be updated at least every two weeks, and includes information about the dorm and its residents as well as news of what has been happening in the dorm. The proctors are encouraged to include pictures with their submissions.
