Introduction

The World Wide Web is all about sharing resources and making information available. However, when we use other people's information we are still responsible for telling others where it came from. Additionally, when we use images, sounds, and other media from other web sites, we must be certain that we're allowed to use that material.

Keep this in mind: Just because it's free, doesn't mean it's yours.

Citations

When it comes to citing sources, making a web page is no different than writing a paper or report. In fact, you might argue that it's even more important, since readers may want to visit the sites you used as sources!

Right now, Suffield does not have a set policy for citing sources on web pages. You should talk to your teacher and find out what procedure you should use to cite your sources.

At the very least, you should cite all quotations, ideas, images, and other multimedia used on your site. Ideally, citations to online materials should include a link to those materials (see our tutorial on links for more information).

Fair Use

The area of fair use is also somewhat fuzzy, and Suffield has no official policy on using media from other sites. You should ask your teacher about their specific policies for your web site.

To be on the safe side, you should never use media (images, sounds, movies, etc) from other sites unless you've been given permission by the owner of that site to do so.

There are several sites which make images and sounds available for free, and you are allowed to use them on your own site. Keep in mind, however, that you should still cite the source of those materials. In fact, several sites may legally require you to give credit to them if you use materials from their site.

For sites that do not have a written policy for using their materials (which is most of the sites on the web), you should not "steal" anything from them. If a site has a picture that you really like, link to that site! The whole point of the web is to interconnect different pages, so feel free to link to other sites that have useful information.
