British and American English Historical influences Dickens' Humor
Setting and Historical Background
(Still under contruction)
First thing to note in most of Dickens Novles, characters ride coaches despite the fact that Dickens lived and wrote during the early stages of the railroads. Thus, we need to appreciate the subtlties of the English industrial history, which contrasts slightly with America's history.
Another aspect to follow Dickens' shifts in the novel from rural town or Marsh villiage to the major city, London. When we finish the novel, we will discuss characters and behavior patterns in each setting.
