How to boot to target mode:

To boot to target mode you are going to need another computer with a firewire port besides the computer that you are fixing.
Shut off the computer that needs to be fixed if it is turned on.
Connect the two computers together via their firewire ports with a firewire cable.
Press the power button on the machine that is being fixed and immediately press and hold the "t" key.
Let go of the key once the firewire symbol appears on the screen. If the screen is broken you will be able to tell when it has booted into target mode by watching the the other computer and seeing when the hard drive of the broken computer appears as an external hard drive.
You should now be able to run tests and back up files on the broken computer by using the good computer.
